Dr. Denis Nam performs over 1,000 hip and knee replacements and revisions annually including some of Rush University Medical Center’s most complex cases. His minimally invasive techniques reduce pain during recovery and have patients walking the same day.

Dr. Denis Nam

Dr. Denis Nam is an internationally-renowned joint replacement surgeon with expertise in total and partial joint replacement surgery. Where others shy away, he excels—successfully performing some of the most complex replacement and reconstruction surgeries at Rush University Medical Center, named the top orthopedic program in IL, and fifth in the nation by US News and World Report. With a special interest in robotic-assisted total joint replacement, Dr. Denis Nam is among the first to master cutting-edge Makoplasty robotic replacements. Throughout his education and career, Dr. Nam has been recognized for his outstanding contributions and achievements in the orthopedic field.

Dr. Nam received his Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and pre-medicine from Yale University, New Haven, CT, where he graduated with the Edward M. Wright ’70 Award for Leadership in Academics and Athletics and Malcolm G. Chace Award for Sportsmanship, Spirit, and Ability as a member of the Yale Hockey Team.  He served as the sole captain of the team during his senior year. Dr. Nam continued his education at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, where he was elected president of Northwestern’s Patient Perspectives Program.

Dr. Nam completed his residency and adult reconstruction and joint replacement fellowship at the esteemed Hospital for Special Surgery, New York, NY, named the top Orthopedic hospital by US News and World Report for over a decade. He took home many accolades during his time including the Hospital for Special Surgery Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement Clinical Excellence Award. He then completed his Master’s of Science degree in Clinical Research and Investigation while at the Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO, where he received numerous honors including the Washington University Clinical Research and Training Center Outstanding Citizenship Award.

During his first eligible year, Dr. Denis Nam was invited into the prestigious, members-only Hip and Knee Societies. These societies comprise the top 100 joint replacement surgeons for the hip and knee respectively, who are recognized for their clinical skill and for advancing the field of total joint arthroplasty. He also serves on the board of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and numerous committees for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Since joining Midwest Orthopedics at Rush, Dr. Denis Nam has helped lead the way in clinical research and innovation. To date, Dr. Nam has authored over 150 peer-reviewed articles and ten book chapters. He also has a special interest in clinical outcomes research following hip and knee arthroplasty with prior investigations focusing on thromboembolism prophylaxis following joint replacement and the implementation of new technologies and surgical techniques in total knee arthroplasty. Outside of work, Dr. Nam enjoys spending time with his wife, Anna, and children Henry, Alice, and Theodore, and playing ice hockey and the guitar.

Tara Duffy

Physician Assistant
Tara joined Dr. Nam’s practice in August 2023 and is excited to join a team focused on excellence in patient care. Tara completed her bachelor and graduate studies at Marquette University. As a PA, Tara treats patients in the clinic as well as assists Dr. Nam in surgery. She most enjoys caring for patients every step of the way during the surgical process.

Priya Patel

Registered nurse
Priya Patel is a nurse clinician for Dr. Nam. She attended the University of Illinois at Chicago for her undergraduate education, and then completed her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) at Marquette University. She takes part in all aspects of the patient journey, from preoperative to postoperative care. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, trying new restaurants, and exploring the city of Chicago!

Catherine Joung

Registered nurse

Catherine Joung is a nurse clinician with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Previous to our practice, Catherine worked as a clinical nurse manager of the Orthopedic floor at Rush.  Her experience on the floor is tremendously valuable in guiding patients through the postoperative process.

Norma Hernandez

Administrative Assistant

After joining our practice in the summer of 2017, Norma leads clinical operations, from scheduling to day-to-day engagements and responding to patient inquiries. She is also a Certified Medical Assistant and Spanish Interpreter.

Victoria Goodale

Administrative Assistant

Victoria Goodale received her undergraduate degree from Illinois Wesleyan University and then earned her physician assistant degree from St. Ambrose University. She is active in all aspects of the patient journey – from preoperative evaluations, assisting Dr. Nam in the operating room, and to guiding patients through the recovery process.

Joanna Ortiz

Administrative Assistant

Joanna Ortiz has spent her career in the medical field, working as a CNA at a nursing home and maternal fetal medicine doctor for over 10 years. Joanna initially joined our practice as a medical assistant and eventually became an administrative assistant, ensuring all back-end processes run smoothly for patients.

Maria Urena

Administrative Assistant

While attending Morton College, Maria Urena decided to set her sights on establishing a career in the medical field. After working for Midwest Orthopedics at Rush for 5 years, Maria has joined our team as an Administrative Assistant where her passion and enthusiasm for patient care help guide them through their journey to recovery.
